Department of Homeland Security says a recent exercise evaluating the Southeast corridor's response to radiological and nuclear threats was a success
The DHS recently concluded an exercise conducted by the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office called Southern Exposure.
The full-scale exercise was an effort to test the readiness capabilities of emergency response authorities in the southeast United States and their response to a radiological or nuclear threat along the interstate highway system, the DHS reported

The nearly two-week exercise included participants from nine states, the District of Columbia and the Port of Charleston in South Carolina, along with federal and local emergency response departments

"This full-scale exercise demonstrated the enhanced coordination and capabilities that the Southeast Transportation Corridor Pilot has implemented in the region," Vayl Oxford, Domestic Nuclear Detection Office director, said in a statement

"We will review the valuable lessons learned from working with state and local law enforcement that can be used to extend radiological/nuclear detection capabilities to other areas of the United States"

The Air Force announced Thursday that an officer who earlier worked at Minot Air Force Base's 91st Space Wing notified the military in May that he and another officer had lied about destroying classified launch components in July 2005

"They were supposed to destroy them and they signed documents saying they destroyed them," said Maj. Laurie A. Arellano, an Air Force spokeswoman.
Instead, she said, "they took them home"

KINGSPORT — Mass casualties were picked up Saturday afternoon from Holston Army Ammunition Plant grounds following a terrorist attack that was nothing more than a special training exercise planned between the United States Army, Wackenhut Services Inc and Wings Air Rescue in Johnson City

“What we’ve been doing is setting up scenario-based training exercises in preparation for a terrorist attack, this situation being that we had a mass casualty exercise,” said Capt Joe Shipley, of the Army Reserve’s 7244 Medical Support Unit based in Kingsport

A top Air Force official -- who was brought in to help improve the transparency of the service's acquisition process -- has resigned amid questions of information leaks, The Associated Press is reporting

Ken Miller, who served as special assistant for Air Force acquisition, has stepped down, the AP reports, quoting several anonymous aides

Miller, a former top Navy official, was hired by the secretary of the Air Force two years ago to improve the transparency of its acquisition process.
He told The Post in February that he had more than 100 meetings in the past year with congressional leaders to update them on the process to select a bidder for a $40 billion deal to build tankers for the Air Force

Two of the aides told the AP that Miller was being investigated by the service for allegedly leaking information to the public before the government disclosed it

The US military cannot locate hundreds of sensitive nuclear missile components, according to several government officials familiar with a Pentagon report on nuclear safeguards

Robert Gates, US defence secretary, recently fired both the US Air Force chief of staff and air force secretary after an investigation blamed the air force for the inadvertent shipment of nuclear missile nose cones to Taiwan
According to previously undisclosed details obtained by the FT, the investigation also concluded that the air force could not account for many sensitive components previously included in its nuclear inventory
